Aspects of the Montessori Method
There are a number of aspects which describe the Montessori method in use:
- The emphasis in the classroom is on cognitive and social development both.
- The teacher has an unobtrusive role in the classroom.
- The instruction in the classroom is mainly individual instruction.
- The mixed age group motivates both younger and older children by encouraging the children to teach and help each other.
- A child may choose his own work.
- A child discovers his own concepts and understanding via self-teaching/correcting materials and thereby recognizing his own mistakes.
- The child may work as long as he wishes on his chosen project and thereby set his own learning pace.
- The child reinforces his own learning by repetition of work and internal feelings of success.
- There is an organized program for learning care of self and environment.
- Each child can work where he chooses, move around and talk at will, while not disturbing the work of others.
